One of the most influential figures in NFL history never played a single minute on the field, yet anyone who knows anything about football knows who he is, or at least his name.

John Madden rose to fame as a head coach and broadcaster for decades and also lent his personality to the hit video game franchise “Madden NFL,” making him a household name and a pop culture icon.

A biopic about him is in the works, with Oscar-winner Nicholas Cage set to play the NFL legend, per Popped.

Madden was a star football player in high school and college, and although he was drafted in 1958 by the Philadelphia Eagles, he suffered a knee injury during training camp that ended his playing career.

He then became a coach and paid his dues before Al Davis, the owner of the Oakland Raiders, made him the team’s head coach for the 1969 season.

Madden quickly turned the Raiders into winners, and after enduring multiple painful defeats in the playoffs, they won Super Bowl XI against the Minnesota Vikings.

He retired as a head coach following the 1978 campaign at just 42 years old, but he quickly became a color commentator for CBS’s NFL coverage and started the phase of his career that he became best known for.

For nearly three decades, he became beloved for his colorful and down-to-earth analysis of football, as well as his humorous tangents and stories.

Of course, younger fans most associate him with the “Madden NFL” video game franchise, which was launched in 1988 and has only grown bigger as time has gone on.

Madden died in December 2021 at his California home at the age of 85.
